ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

As a student I struggled with reading. I remember feeling down right stupid in school, because I couldn't as well as my peers. I remember being in 4th grade and still reading single line picture books, while my classmates were reading chapter books. I hated reading, it was difficult and boring. I couldn't have cared less about the characters in all the books. I didn't want to read about horses and best friends, it was boring to me. The first chapter book I read on my own was "The Tail of Despereaux", the book was way too long for me, I had no idea how to read Despereaux, and had I mostly picked it up for the illustrations. After two months of working through the book I was hooked. I went from the girl that hated reading, to the girl that got in trouble for reading under her desk during math. Kings, knights, castles, faraway lands and most of all little heroes that did amazing things, captured me. My childhood was turbulent, I could let everything going on around me swallow me hole or I could stand, be brave and push forward like the heroes in the stories. Armed with stories of underdog heroes and the support of some amazing teachers, I've over come many challenges in my life and education. Now as a teacher myself, I hope to inspire, empower and educate children. Slaying a dragon or learning to reading can both seem like impossible task, but with the right support, hard work and a little braver, all little heroes can do anything.
