I had the privilege of teaching over 150 students a year as a middle school English Teacher for 8 years. During that time, I taught many different courses, including ELL, Intervention, GATE, and served as the Academic Coach for the ELA staff for a year. During summers, I enjoyed opportunities to be a Mentor Teacher for Breakthrough Collaborative, completed the two year San Francisco Symphony teacher education program, Keeping Score, and taught my writing curriculum for the prestigious De Anza Summer Enrichment Program. All four summers I received 90-100% of student reviews rating my course, "Just Right."
I believe students live up to our expectations and opinions of them, and they have a way of knowing the truth, not the act we put on. So, sincerely believe your students can absolutely blow you away with what they can do, and they will. Be flexible; the most beautiful teaching moments are usually unplanned. When designing lessons, leave room for the students to explore and experiment with the material, to show who they are through their work, and to create something that fills them with pride and an increased sense of self. Then, sit back and prepare to be amazed. Never forget the power of humor.
7 out of 8 years, a student from one of my classes won the 8th Grade Excellence in Writing Award
MAT in Multi-Cultural Teaching Single-Subject Credential for Secondary, ELA BA in English/Comparative Literature, with the first two years as part of an invitation-only Humanities Honor Program
Currently, I work from home as a freelance writer for many companies all over the world. My experience has included all types of copywriting, marketing campaigns, rebranding, and whiteboard animation video scripts. I use the same tools I taught my students to write compelling, effective copy that converts for big names, such as: Disney, Johnson & Johnson, Energizer, Proctor & Gamble, Microsoft, YDraw and many more.
