This PowerPoint offers a brief overview of symbolism and allegory, examples of each, as well as how the two are different from one an other. I love to use it to prepare students for the Lord of the Flies.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught ninth grade English Language Arts for 6 years. I taught 7th grade for 4 years. I have also taught grades 8, 10-12, including a World Mythology elective course for grades 11-12.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I offer rigorous formative and summative assessments with engaging texts for the students. My students must use textual evidence when responding to analytical questions, and I often pair high-interest nonfiction excerpts with fiction texts. I also offer Book Clubs to promote independent reading in the classroom. Every Monday, students are paired in groups of 3-5 where they read titles of their choice with their friends. There are no grades assigned to this school year-long initiative. It is based upon Penny Kittle's Book Clubs, and helps infuse a love for reading that many students lose by the time they reach the high school level.
