I began teaching mathematics in 1989. and became math department chair in 2004 at Alice Drive Middle School in Sumter, South Carolina and through the years have taught in all three grade levels, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. My most recent experience has been in teaching 6th grade Gifted and Talented math and a PLTW course, Automation and Robotics. I've been trained as a mentor for the South Carolina ADEPT program and have mentored a number of new teachers, practicum students, and interns through the years. I've also served as a part time adjunct professor for the College of Charleston and for the University of South Carolina, teaching other teachers about math and technology.
My goals as a teacher are to: provide the academic tools needed in order for my students to progress to next grade and beyond while providing a supportive learning environment. I also want to make sure that my students have a good time while we learn and I encourage my students to discover that math can be exciting and that it can actually be FUN!. I have high expectations and my students learn quickly that I fully expect for them to stay engaged in their learning and to communicate mathematically.
