As of the 2016-2017 school year, I will have been teaching for 10 years (a decade, my, how time flies). I have taught 4th grade for 6 years, 5th grade for 2 years, and now 7th grade for 2 years. I am enjoying teaching middle school and imparting knowledge, as well as learning from my students each and every day.
In addition to teaching English Language Arts and Social Studies, I am a huge advocate for character education in the classroom. I incorporate activities that involve teaching good manners, respect, responsibility, random acts of kindness, and so much more. I also teach by themes, so most of my curriculum ties back to a certain theme each nine week period. These themes are ones that students can build upon such as change, power, compassion, relationships, perspectives, and more.
I was chosen as the Top of the Times Teacher in 2011 by my local newspaper as well as have been a Teacher of the Year Nominee twice. I am also an avid grant writer and have received thousands of dollars in grants from Target, Donors Choose, Family Trust (a local credit union), and the local school foundation.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Winthrop University in 2006 and a Master of Education in Middle Level Education with a concentration in English also from Winthrop University in 2012. I am still debating a Doctorate degree...
I am married to my wonderful husband, and we have 3 kitty fur babies- Tigger, Ham Sandwich, and Waffles. I am a book lover through and through and read any spare moment I can. I enjoy learning and, therefore, continue my education through technology courses and teaching myself how to do things I am interested in. I also adore coffee (cannot live without it), Pinterest, owls (of course), and blogs.
