I am entering my 11th year of teaching elementary school. I taught 3rd grade for 10 years and was given the opportunity to loop with my students to 4th grade last year. Looping has been an amazing experience - I had wanted to try it for a while and I LOVE it! That "ah-ha" moment when a student who has been struggling finally "gets it" is AMAZING!
I would describe my teaching style as "organized chaos." Once I have taught a whole-group lesson, my students are engaged in independent work, cooperative group assignments, workstations, or menu activities while I work with individuals or groups. I encourage students to take chances and emphasize that making mistakes is part of learning. I try to foster a safe environment - physically, mentally, and emotionally by showing every child that they are special.
I have been honored to receive the Teacher of the Year award. And have been a Teacher Leader, Team Leader, Demonstration Classroom, and Student Teacher Cooperating Teacher. I enjoy having interns/student teachers in my classroom and have been blessed to have one or more almost every year since my 3rd year of teaching.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies and Reading.
Prior to starting my teaching career in 2002, I was a preschool teacher, a stay-home mom, and worked for state government until my third child was born. I have 3 grown children - Nick who lives in El Paso with his wife, Keith who lives in Dallas with his wife (and my brand new granddaughter!!), and Jenni who lives in Austin and goes to Texas State. 5 years ago I married the love of my life and live in the Houston metro area.
