About Our Company

A student came to us with a plea: "My teacher doesn't know how sound comes out of the piano. I mean, I know the hammer hits the strings, and then you hear a note, but how?!?" Until then, it had never occurred to us that all piano teachers do not know that the strings vibrate, which moves the air in a longitudinal wave, which makes contact with the ear drum, which vibrates, which sends a message to the the brain via three bones and a nerve. The brain registers this signal as sound. We thought everybody knew that--how can you play like Mitsuko Uchida if you don't know that your whole job is to create pleasurable vibrations using this combination of wood, iron, and copper? Get this--even fewer know about many of the advances in neuroscience, sports physiology and acoustics that make some of the traditional methods of instruction obsolete. That's the whole point of various styles of learning--but we've gotten away from the reason for it all and forgotten that it is all about each individual student and the best way to teach that person. With an average of 25 years teaching math, science and music and writing curriculum, we teach teachers how to see the global goals (read: perform like a BOSS) and then get their curriculum such that the progress is quantifiable. And yes, we really do teach elementary school kids the physics of sound right along with the intricacies of Beethoven, using words like sine waves and diminished sevenths and amplitude and Mixolydian scale. They love it. We do too.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Either the student can play the song or not. Either the student can read the music or not. Either the student can interpret what's going on or not. The art of style is very personal and subjective, and that is nurtured through the one-on-one interaction with the primary piano instructor. But application of knowledge is key: Can you play it in all 12 major keys? Can you change the arrangement to accommodate a trio because your normal six piece ensemble group went to [insert dive restaurant] yesterday and three of them now have food poisoning and can't perform? Can you tell me why you used this particular chord progression instead of this chord progression when transposing such and such (saying something other than, "'Cause it sounds good?" with a shrug). Our curriculum is not grade specific because a. restaurant maladies can happen at any age, and b. all of our lessons can be adapted for your situation. You'll get the robust version, with examples of ways to modify for a ten year old or a seasoned 20 year professional pianist. See more at ThePianoInstructor.net

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

We have many honors, grant awards, and so on, but please, we urge you to see our lessons for yourself. Our lessons are thorough, clear and effective on several different levels for many different abilities. They are available in multiple languages, and are easily adaptable to your situation. Please see for yourself.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

We offer a variety of approaches that will help shape your lessons, instead of a firm You Gotta Do It Like This. We found that this works better for today's student.
