This is my twelfth year teaching fifth grade. I currently teach reading, language arts, and social studies. I have also tutored students older and younger in math and reading.
I love social studies, and my goal is to bring the time periods to life in my classroom. I want my students to experience the standards, not just memorize them for the sake of passing a test. In reading, my style is very similar. I try to integrate into my classroom numerous social studies materials. This integration in both fiction and non-fiction reading materials allows me to hit two subjects at once. Writing is something I enjoy, and I have found my students strengthen as they see purpose in what they are writing. Yes, there are some that love creative writing, but many of my students prefer writing with a purpose. Common Core is all about providing evidence, and I think writing on science and social studies based topics allows the students to hit so many learning goals at once.
I was honored to be selected at Teacher of the Year for Knox Elementary in 2012. I was also the recipient of the Golden Apple Award in 2008. In addition, I have been named Teacher of the Month and currently serve on the leadership committee for my school.
I graduated in 2005 from Clayton College and State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Middle Grades Education. I have since earned my Masters Degree in Middle Grades Social Studies, and I have also earned my Specialist Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Piedmont College.
