I have over 10 years of classroom experience and have held Leader of Art roles in both primary and secondary schools in the state and private sector. I have a fine Art degree and competence in a range of practical skills as well as maintaining a passionate interest in the arts, art history and education. In my teaching I have been consistently rated as 'outstanding' in all areas. I have a well-respected current classroom practice, in addition to the work I do at my company; The Primary Art Class.
I have an approach to art in primary schools that exceeds and extends the current UK national curriculum expectations for art and design at KS1, KS2 and KS3. The art curricula that I have developed for schools encompass a good coverage of art skills and art knowledge. This type of balanced curriculum enables children to gain competence in skills and techniques, and they engage in the design process and create original practical work. Children are also given opportunities to talk and write about art by a range of artists and from different genres and styles, this approach encourages the acquisition of new vocabulary and supports visual literacy. Progression is built into the curriculum as children revisit key skills and techniques as well as developing their ability to ‘read’ artwork.
I am the author of Teaching Primary Art and Design, published by Bloomsbury. The book is a guide to teaching art lessons for key stage one and lower and upper key stage two. It features practical ideas that link creative outcomes to contextual understanding, using famous artworks.
