Hello and thanks for stopping by! I'm Sally and I am passionate about supporting educators and children as we take this amazing learning journey together, in classrooms, at kitchen tables and in our communities. My background is as an Occupational Therapist, with 20 years experience working in adult mental health, both here in Australia and for 2 years in the UK. As a professional in the public health system, I experienced the many challenges of trying to meet the individual needs of each patient, whilst complying with the administrative and regulatory requirements of the system. I have since swapped the many challenges of the public health system for the challenges (and rewards!) of home educating. My youngest daughter and I are currently in our sixth year on this journey, balancing the need for a quality education with the many challenges of a teenager living with sensory processing disorder, nonverbal learning disorder and scoliosis that requires wearing a back brace.
If I had to define my teaching style, it would probably be "eclectic / collaborative". Is that a thing? Basically, my daughter and I work together to find whatever method "works". This involves a lot of reading, physical and educational games, outings, community based activities, online content and discussion.
I feel immensely privileged to be the mother of 3 amazing children and to have spent 20 years working with people living with severe and enduring mental illness. I am humbled by their lessons.
Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Hons) and Bachelor of Arts (English and European history), both from The University of Queensland.
I am also the very proud mother of two adult children, who are now out in the world, doing their thing! My daughter is currently studying secondary school teaching and completing her arts degree, whilst my son is a registered nurse, working in intensive care. Both these lovelies completed K-12 in the traditional schooling system. We had lots of fun meeting the many and varied challenges of being a single parent family, working full time, doing the before-and-after-school-care thing, soccer and cricket matches, horse riding and guitar lessons, learning-to-drive-with-your-sensory-challenged-little-sister-in-the-back-seat and standing in long queues to buy the latest Harry Potter book or Lord of the Rings movie tickets.
