TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I’ve taught science to middle and high schoolers since 2002 across many areas of science, to include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Science, and Earth/Space science. I teach undergraduate science courses and graduate level education courses to adult learners for an online university. I also work with students in one-to-one tutoring, which is awesome since I’m able to tailor instruction directly to their needs! Mostly, I mentor new science teachers and love it!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe in hands-on, minds-on teaching. I often tell them that it’s not enough that you had fun making lemonade from powdered drink and water. You must understand the why and how! In other words, what happened to the saturation rate as the temperature increased? How did this impact solubility? I like having students up and moving around as much as possible. So many of my activities will have the option of group work or independent, depending on the need and objective.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I'd be lying if I said that the awards and recognition meant nothing! But for me, the shining moments range from empowering students to take their learning into their own hands to working with and learning from other teachers.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have a Bachelor’s in Science in Biochemistry from Florida State University (Go ‘Noles!), a Master’s in Science for Georgia State University in Secondary Science Education with Advanced Technology, and a Ph.D. in Educations with concentration in Online Design and Curriculum and Instruction from Capella University.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I love working with new and early career teachers, generally in the classroom under 5 years as, an Instructional coach, instructor, and now, a mentor. I learn from them as much as they learn from me. My goal is to inspire more teachers of science, which in turn, inspires more youth in science!
