I have taught Language Arts for 22 years at the high school level where I have experienced all levels of learning and watched and taken part in the exciting educational shifts over the course of many years. In 1993 I started with a grade book in my hand and a black board on my wall. I am now a teacher in an age of amazing technological advances in what is now one of the newest digital schools in America. Every student has a laptop to enhance learning. I am adept in many methods of teaching and enjoy learning and evolving with the times.
While I wear many hats as I teach, perhaps the biggest and most effective strategies are that of facilitator, and learning by doing. Literature can be very difficult to teach as students must analyze and synthesize material, so as a teacher my task is to create activities that help them do these things. I am very visual with a strong emphasis on non linguistic representations with students having the chance to present their material in this way through project based learning where appropriate.
Mentor teacher, Intern supervisor, teacher of the year nominee, Walt Disney teacher of the year nominee, 2x cheer coach of the year.
I received my degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham where my journey began in the art of teaching and changing young lives.
I have one son, and I also love animals, so much so that I became a Certified Veterinary Assistant. This is a job I work on week- ends and in the summer.
