I am a retired Palm Beach County School teacher who taught Industry certification classes for Microsoft and Adobe. Presently I am employed by Career Source of Palm Beach County as a Microsoft Industry Certification consultant, working with clients to achieve certification in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
I am currently an Information Technology teacher at Palm Beach Gardens high school in Palm Beach Gardens Florida. Objectives for the course includes comprehensive exposure to the Microsoft Office suite. Students have the opportunity to take the MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) certification tests in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access. The Microsoft Office Specialist program is among the most globally renowned certification programs available today.
My teaching experience includes a total of 25 years in Computer Information Technology and Marketing. I have taught numerous business courses including: Marketing, Advanced Marketing, Sports & Entertainment Marketing, Desktop Publishing & Design, and Digital Information Technology.
My goal as a teacher is to deliver a quality education to my students.
The teaching style used in both the school setting as well as the client centered setting, is that of a facilitator. I create my own curriculum that is provided as a distance learning model, where students can work as their own pace while allowing the teacher/facilitator to assist those who need additional help. This style promotes self-learning and help students develop critical thinking skills and retain knowledge that leads to self-actualization. It has proven to be very successful in students/clients reaching their potential goals, the obtaining the skills needed to pass the Microsoft Industry Certification exams.
Much like my business partner, Janann Nicholson, my teaching is that of a facilitator. I create my own authentic lessons & projects, with my business partner, that reflect the skills necessary for the MOS Industry certification. The lessons/projects allow students to work at their own pace and allow me to assist when needed.
All too often high school technology courses center on pre-packaged textbook exercises rather than authentic learning experiences. Students often describe such educational practices as mundane, boring, and passive learning experiences. One of the most effective methods of breathing life into classrooms is developing authentic problem-centered learning activities in technology classrooms.
Authentic activities are crucial to learning, especially in technology education. Janann Nicholson & I have developed projects to center on authentic activities that mimic what professionals do. We believe that such applications further the students understanding to current business & technology practices and increase the likelihood of their success in real world situations. Our ultimate goal is to have students go beyond mastering the tools, but understand the cognitive process of design principles by adding impact to words in a document, making appropriate decisions, and pay close attention to detail. Hopefully, students will take a large project, break it into parts, and refine it for improvement, much like the workplace.
Personally, my fervent goal is not to take sole responsibility for students learning, but rather to allow student responses to drive the lessons, shift instructional strategies, and alter content. I determine what, how, and the process of what is to be learned and provide students with an authentic activity that empowers students with responsibility for their own learning allowing them to discover errors, make changes, and push understanding further.
I pride myself with understanding what our students already know so I can get them to where they need to go
