I am heading into my 5th year teaching English at a high performing public charter school in Northern California. Due to the small size of our school, I have the challenge of teaching 8th, 9th, 10th and 12th grade, which includes one class of Advanced Placement English Literature. Prior to teaching high school English, I taught health to K-12th graders.
I focus on teaching explicit reading strategies for high-level informational and literary texts coupled with teaching expository writing skills. I enjoy using Socratic dialogue to help students read deeply, think analytically, discuss skillfully, and prepare for the writing process. I use a Googledocs writing system that engages students in the re-writing process continuously versus assigning writing and grading later. This allows me to give immediate and continual feedback--thus I really see myself as each student's individual writing coach.
My English students continually score in the top range on their state tests, as well as their PSAT and AP exams. Last year, my 10th grade English class scored 7th in the state on the English portion of the California STAR test.
I received my teaching credential from Dominican University and my B.A. in Liberal Studies with a minor in English from Sonoma State University.
