I have been teaching elementary art for ten years and have loved every minute of it. I work with Kindergarten through Fifth Grade students. It is wonderful to see each group of children grow and mature from year to year. That is what is so special about being a 'specials' teacher. Children amaze me and their ideas are so inspiring. I hope that you find some of my lessons useful. Thanks for visiting TeachersPayTeachers!
My curriculum is based on providing students with many opportunities and exposing them to many different artists, artworks and movements in art throughout history. I think that elementary art is about the process and experience of making art, not the final product. At the beginning of each art lesson, I like to provide students with information about an artwork or a certain art movement. Then we discuss the techniques that will be used for the project and for creating an original artwork. I think it is important to nurture children and guide them through their creative process without influencing them too much with my own ideas and tastes. That can be pretty tricky. I offer praise, kindness, inspiration when needed and constructive criticism. Sometimes you have to get out of the way and let art happen.
