I have been an Elementary School Teacher for over 10 years but my true passion is found in my extra-curricular drama programs and summer camps! I write quirky and funny adaptations of classic fairy tales and folk tales for children of all ages. Children get involved imagining and drawing their characters and the scenery and creating or contributing props. Parents get involved too, with painting sets, making costumes, and/or bringing treats for the final performance after-party. My plays are lighthearted, always have a positive message delivered in a fun way, and allow children's creative genius to shine! With all of the parent and grand-parent involvement, they really build community as well. PLAYS I HAVE DIRECTED: Beauty and The Beast, The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music (review), The Gruffalo PLAYS I HAVE ALSO WRITTEN/DIRECTED Hansel and Gretel, Thumbelina, The Emperor's New Clothes, Little Red Riding Hood, The Ugly Duckling (coming in 2018), The Elves and The Shoemaker (coming in 2018), Stone Soup (coming in 2018)
Even though I am always the Director (as you will be too) I allow input from the cast and in fact I encourage it at every step. Not only does this take the pressure off of me to come up with all of the answers, the children take ownership and come up with many excellent ideas themselves! Each play that I write is broken down into 15 x 1 hour rehearsals. I have included Teaching Notes at the beginning of each script to help you to achieve the same results that I do. I usually have one or two reluctant readers or shy actors so my plays include roles for those who prefer fewer lines. Not to worry - they can be involved in so many other ways!
(Even though I know this question pertains to Serious Accolades, of which I have none....so far...) I am routinely honoured with lots of hugs and smiles from children and the collaboration of many parents. I am rewarded each time a child returns for another of my programs and camps! Keep in mind that all of my participants PAY to be involved. How cool would it be for you to offer these plays in your classroom for FREE!?! That's LOVE baby!
I hold a Bachelor of Applied Science in Family Studies, and a Masters Degree in Education (Literacy Specialization). Yay ME!
I live at home in Canada with my dog and collection of handmade dolls (some of which I made) and boxes of props and costumes for my plays!
