I have been teaching for 19 years now! It flies by...trust me... When you enjoy what you do...you know the rest... Anyway, I have taught every level you can think of. Why--because I LOVE teaching (and coaching!) I played professional basketball and coached. Teamwork has always been a huge part of my life. Teaching just came so natural to me because I found it to be so similar to coaching kids. *Find what they love and use that to guide them! (The last 2 years it has been about ninjas!--built in classroom management!)
In our class we use the Ninja method: Quiet as a ninja, respectful like a ninja, act responsibly like a ninja, solve problems like a ninja! My class has been coined the Ninja class. When a student is assigned to my class they know they are mindful ninjas in training! We are well known around the school by students and staff for being silent as ninjas--coming in from recess, going for lunch, leaving at the end of the day. My students strive to be like a mindful ninja! Whenever it’s time to line up, my students line up in a straight line with their hands together at their chest, fingers pointing to the sky. This is the position they are in when I know they are ready to learn. We are also known as problem solvers on the school yard. Every student is encouraged to solve problems by offering a suggestion and a solution --so there will rarely/never be a fight over a chair or a pencil etc in my class. If there is a disagreement, most often they do "rock, paper, scissors" without my initiation. At the end of the year a disguised “ninja” (me), visits our class and performs silent ninja moves to calming ninja music in the background. Lights are dimmed. The students are motioned to sit on the carpet where they will be “sworn” in to be an official mindful ninja. They are presented with a ninja "token" with their name on it. Each letter of each name has a positive description of them (acrostic poem really). It is absolutely FABULOUS! Students want to be in the mindful ninja class! #loveofteaching #loveofmindfulninjas
