Fourth grade best describes my recent area of experience working 15 years with 10-year-olds in two different settings: 7 years in gifted education and 8 years in regular education. Prior to these experiences, I taught one year in a pull-out GT program working primarily with students from grades K - 4 leaping from a 12-year experience working with fifth graders. Finally, my journey takes me back to my first 4 years with second graders.
I love the flexibility and creativity that teaching affords professionals. I am happiest when I am able to blend subject matter and skills into a connective piece of study. Writing and implementing units of study allows my students to experience the interdependence of academic domains in real-time. I create a lot of resources for my students to use in my class and beyond if they choose to keep them. I want them to understand that a textbook need not define their school experience and that information is all around them; they just need to collect it.
I recived grants for multiple projects over the years that include: * $1,000 for a Pioneer unit of study from my school district - 2003 * Bell Grants from a local foundation in amounts of $300.00 to $500.00 for grade level Indiana State House activities, scrapbooking, project materials for a unit on Black American Soldiers in the History of the United States Military (Tuskegee Airmen, Buffalo Soldiers, and the54th Massachuttes Regiment.) * I raised money over $2,500.00 from 10 -12 community donors to support and pay for a county-wide presentation at Ball State University with 7 of the former military men from the WWII Tuskegee Air/Ground crew: AKA, "The Red-Tailed Angels." Over 3,000 students from Muncie, Yorktown, and Delta in elementary, middle school, and high schools attended that day in February 2006. * I was awarded a $700.00 grant from Target to take all fourth graders from my school to see the Titanic exhibit at the Indianapolis Children's Museum. My honors and awards amount to many smiles and boundless measures of joy.
I obtained my Bachelosr and Masters of Arts from Ball State University. I earned my license in Gifted Education in 2003. I completed training from the Indiana Writing Project the summer of 2003 as well.
