I was a K-1 self-contained mild/mod special ed aide for six years. I've taught within general education and special education for 10 years as a K-12 Education Specialist. I've taught 7-8th grade math in a self contained classroom and have co-taught an 8th grade ELA GE class. I've also worked as an Education Specialist online. I am currently a master teacher, a K-12 Special Education Teacher and Case Manager for a charter school.
I think it is important to gain the students' trust and use their background knowledge to help teach new skills/information. Learning should be fun and memorable for the student. Each child should be able to learn in their own style which means we, as teachers, should present the information in a variety of ways. I like to joke with the kids, create, talk, and play in addition to learning grade level, and standards based, information. I remind myself often that children each learn at their own pace and in their own way and it's up to me to present the information in a way that helps foster growth.
