I've taught for six years in North Carolina. I've earned a bachelor degree from East Carolina University in Elementary Education. I've taught four years in a high poverty elementary school with a high population of Asian ESL refugee students.
I consistently use cooperative learning and differentiated instruction styles (e.g. Carol Ann Tomlinson models and Kagan Cooperative Learning structures). I have an undying goal to engage students when presenting and teaching challenging material, so that under privileged students can be given the confidence and knowledge needing to succeed. And also to increase curiosity and spark in all children! I do a lot of flexible grouping in Word Study, Reading and Math. I love the opportunities small groups can give you. It's the perfect time for giving descriptive feedback that is aligned to the student's individual academic needs. Small group lessons (e.g. Guided Reading & Guided Math) are more intimate and provide more opportunities for students to set and reach personal goals, and then ultimately reach success and mastery! This will build confidence in students with the support of a nurturing teacher and a nurturing environment. During this small group "conference" time, I challenge students and help them create goals for themselves. A light bulb is ignited and they strive to reach these "goals" which are clearly printed and accessible to them daily. It's great to have students take ownership of their own learning and it provides clear data of whether students are meeting and achieving academic goals. If you want to know more about styles to help drive my instruction,l please see the Third Grade Lesson Plan template that has many ideas and resources from authors, books, blogs, etc. that have inspired me. These "resources" are in a bold red font which makes it easier to locate. Last thing I want to mention about myself is that I'm always reflecting on my teaching practice. And if you have suggestions for me, or suggestions on any of my products that you may view, please let me know! I love getting feedback from great teachers like you!
Received a district Weyerhauser grant and three Donors Choose grants
I'm currently working on a National Board Certification. I'm excited about this experience and I'm ready to learn a lot!
I enjoy teaching the many subject areas in third grade as it gives me flexibility to integrate these subjects. I believe in a welcoming, cooperative classroom in which learning takes place in many styles and varieties. I try to incorporate cooperative groups and team building as much as possible, into my instructional plans. Please see the lesson plan template I prepared titled "Lesson Plan - 3rd Grade" and I want to share it with others. It's a resourceful template with resources embedded within it, which have really helped me create the most effective lesson plans.
