MY TEACHING STYLE

First, I believe that students must see and hear reading modeled on a daily basis to consider becoming a lifelong reader. According to recent research, (Giordano, 2011), for independent reading to be successful, teachers must model good reading habits through think-alouds, conferring, and discussion. Students benefit from the teacher who reads aloud, questions aloud, predicts aloud, and makes inferences as a reader. When students can hear what goes on in the teacher’s head it gives an example to follow.Secondly, I believe that reading is successful when there is a knowledge base of the subject matter. “Learning is optimal when teachers are able to take students’ known experiences and relate them to what is being taught.” (Simmons-Herts, 2010). Students need to be prompted to think about how the text relates to their life. Basal readers have wonderful stories and articles, but many students cannot always relate because there is nothing to build on with the subject matter. The constructivist approach to learning describes how we place meaning on new learning experiences through prior experiences (Vygotsky, 1978), (Simmons-Herts, 2010). Finally, I believe reading success is a lifelong skill that has to be exercised daily. I have a mentality of reading as a “use or lose it” ability. Not that you will ever forget how to read but without practicing and implementing reading strategies at all literacy levels, students will remain at a beginner’s level and never fall in love with real reading. Reading is based upon experiences, background knowledge, it must be implemented daily while modeling speaking and listening to real literature. To quote Patricia Polacco in Dear Mr. Falker, “Honey is sweet and so is knowledge…but knowledge is like the bee that made the sweet honey it has to be chased through the pages of a book.”
