I began my teaching life as a high school English teacher in San Diego. Eventually I became department chair and district technology mentor. Since 1995 I've been creating Web-based activities that promote real, rich and relevant learning. These began by co-developing the WebQuest and carried on to other formats and strategies for engaging students and making the most of what's available on the Web.
Although I'm comfortable with direct instruction, my passion is student-driven construction of meaning for deeper understandings.
I was fortunate enough to be chosen as a finalist for San Diego County Teacher of the Year in 1991. Since then I've enjoyed developing WebQuests and other approaches to student-driven learning and am regarded as a leader in the field of edtech and rich learning.
A product of both public and private schools, I earned a BA in English and Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and later an MA in Instructional Design / Education Technology from San Diego State University. I've continued to learn from mentors in the fields of Understanding by Design and Curriculum Mapping.
In 1997, we moved our family to Australia where I have been working as a consultant to NGOs and software companies while working with schools to leverage technologies for rich learning. We love our life in the bush and regularly - yes! - have kangaroos, cockatoos, blue-tongue lizards and even echidna's roaming around our home.
