I have been teaching since 1994. I have taught every age group from Preschool to 12th grade. I have taught all subject areas as both a regular education teacher and a special education teacher. I love music and have written many songs over the years which I have successfully used to engage students in learning. The songs and the accompanying activities and worksheets provide direct instruction of specific standards and concepts. The tunes and lyrics are original and are written in a variety of popular music styles from throughout the 20th century up to today. They are specifically designed to help the students to learn to read and spell in general and provide a focus on key vocabulary words. The songs provide direct instruction of the core concepts for specific content and standards. The songs are easy to learn and are fun for the kids since they sound like real songs that they hear on the radio.
I use a mixed approach when teaching class because each individual child needs a varied group of activities to develop and learn. By having a wide variety of activities throughout a typical week, I insure that I am providing every student with what they need. This means that there is lecture and notes, singing, silly activities, serious essay writing, complex activities, in depth, difficult tests, etc. Starting the lesson each day spending two to three minutes with the song captures everyone's attention and prepares them to listen and learn. The songs are perfect for inclusion of special education, English language learner, and EIP students. The songs include repeated long vowel sounds and physical movements that make it easy for these students to jump in with all of the other students.
