TEACHING EXPERIENCE

During my student teaching experience, I have had the fortunate pleasure of teaching grades second (with a second and third combination class for social studies and science), fifth grade (with a fourth and fifth grade combination classes in social studies and science) and kindergarten. After my student teaching, I was asked to teach a first grade class for the remaining of that school year. After my short-term interim position, I interviewed in Lincoln County Schools System in North Carolina. I took a position at Catawba Springs Elementary School, where I began teaching fourth grade for two years on the traditional school calendar. Later, I taught second grade for six years (one of the six years I taught second grade in a year round school.) I then transferred to St. James Elementary School, which was a brand new school. I began teaching second grade for seven years and am currently teaching third grade. I have volunteered twice to loop from second grade to third grade.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I would describe my teaching style as flexible based on my students' needs. At times, I implement demonstration and modeling to the students to achieve success. I feel that it is vital to act as a positive role model by demonstrating skills and processes and then I coach or guide students to develop and apply taught skills and knowledge. I also find it very important that my students learn to work independently to solve problems by using and adapting demonstrated methods. I also encourage student participation and adapt the presentation to include various learning styles. Students are expected to take some responsibility for learning what they need to know and for asking for help when they don't understand something. I incorporate various hands-on activities and the 21st century learning goals. I emphasize student-centered learning where there is much more responsibility placed on the students to take the initiative for meeting the demands of various learning tasks. I find this type of teaching style works best for students who are comfortable with independent learning and who can actively participate and collaborate with other students. I try to design group activities which necessitate active learning, student-to-student collaboration and problem solving. I design learning situations and activities that require student processing and application of course content in creative and original ways.

I have a BS in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Development from East Tennessee State University.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I have been married for fourteen years to wonderful husband. We have two active children. Our eleven year old son plays basketball, football, and baseball, as well as other afterschool activities. Our seven year old daughter plays basketball, baseball, and takes hip-hop dance lessons.
