As a private tutor for 15 years and a former high school/college English teacher, I have honed my skills in helping students succeed in the following areas: applying study skills; analyzing literature; mapping and writing essays including book reports and college application essays; research papers; grammar; vocabulary; spelling; reading; oration; creative writing.
Because I teach one-on-one, my style is very focused. Each student I work with has the benefit of learning how to communicate what their needs are, as well as convey any additional issues they feel are holding them back educationally. I absolutely love working with children of all ages and all levels of reading and writing. Actually witnessing the change in students as they move up their own ladders of success is a thrill. My style is kick-back, though my rules are strict. I keep an open mind while instilling two-way respect between us.
As a published author, my recent Young Adult novel Upside Down in a Laura Ingalls Town (ages 14-17) just won the prestigious Sarton Women's Literary Award. As a private tutor, I am not eligible for teaching awards; however, I know I am having an effect when I end up working with families for many years. Longevity is my sweet reward.
I graduated from California State University Long Beach with a degree in Theater Arts, the focus on writing and directing.
I LOVE working with kids of all ages and talking to teachers about what works and what doesn't. With technology changing as fast as the weather, I enjoy learning the latest with regards to education. I also give guest talks on how to implement study skills, how to conduct research, how to write a book report, and how to write a novel.
