I've taught 2nd grade for 5 years in Nashville. We moved to North Carolina, where I taught 4th grade in Wake County in North Carolina. I switched schools, and teach 2nd grade again in Durham. I love it! I teach all subject areas- reading, writing, language, math, science, and social studies. I have taught with the Common Core State Standards for over 5 years.
I love penguins, which I use to my advantage in my classroom (nicknamed "The Rookery"). I highly value a team approach, and my students read EVERY day! I have been inspired by Donalyn Miller's book, "The Book Whisperer," and I also love Choice Literacy's weekly blog. Writer's Workshop is a daily occurrence in my classroom as well. In math, I love helping the students deconstruct their thinking to go deeper to truly understand numbers and mathematical concepts. We say it every day, "Explain your thinking!" I am a huge proponent of technology use appropriately in the classroom. We must prepare children to use devices wisely and efficiently, as their futures will greatly depend on their ability to think critically using technologies that have not been invented yet. Technology should not be used to "baby-sit," rather as a way to learn, as well as to extend and express learning.
