I am a practicing fine artist with 5+ years experience as a contracted art teacher. Most of my work is provided by community-outreach programs and, as a result, I've had the opportunity to work with students from a variety of backgrounds, ages and experience levels. I worked with schools, which can no longer afford art funding, to provide short and long term art education for k-12 students. I have also provided comprehensive painting, drawing and sculpture classes to community colleges, adults/continuing education programs and pre-college study programs.
Art is unique, in that in gives students the opportunity to ask all the questions. Few other subjects in school take the trouble to help students learn how to generate original ideas. Imaginative thinking is at the core of art, sciences, engineering and numerous other disciplines but students rarely have the opportunity to exercise this part of their brains. When I was a student, many of my early art classes were lead by following along with the instructor or replicating the styles of other artists, which can be great for learning traditional skills but not so great in encouraging truly creative expression. My aim for any given course is always to introduce the students to new materials and methods, which they may not of had the opportunity to experience in their other art classes but also to encourage new ways of thinking about art and creation. I want each student to walk away with a body of art work which expresses themselves and their unique experiences- and I want to enable the students to think about art as a form of action.
