After 10 years as a criminal investigator and counterterrorism analyst for the United State Air Force and 5 years working for GE Aerospace Industries, life took a detour and I, based on my acquisition of Spanish while a Rotary International Exchange Student to Cordoba, Argentina from 1970 - 1971, ended up as a Spanish/French teacher. I taught French and Spanish in New York from 1991 to 1996. I taught French 1 and 2 and Spanish 1, 2, 3, and 4 in middle and high school. I taught Spanish 101/102 and 201/201 at Utica College from 1991 - 1996. After moving to Florida in 1996, I stayed with Spanish. I have taught Spanish 1, 2, 3, 4, AP Spanish Language and Culture and AP Spanish Literature and Culture. I also designed and taught high school courses based on Spanish for Specific Purposes: Medical, Law, Business and Social Services. I conducted Spanish for the Classroom Staff Development courses for teachers and paraprofessionals wishing to develop basic conversation skills in order to improve their interaction with their Spanish speaking students and their parents.
I am an advocate of Comprehensible Input. I believe reading is the best way to improve vocabulary acquisition. Music is a way to improve listening skills, pronunciation and fluency. So, I use a wide variety of methods to encourage my students to take ownership of their learning. I currently teach a 3X3 block schedule, with 100 minutes for each class. As a result I use several activities each class period. Teacherspayteachers has provided a wonderful variety of activities that I use to provide the practice necessary for my students to master the language.
