I currently have a small private practice where I work with students who are deaf and hard of hearing, using the Auditory Verbal Approach (AVT). I am seeking my LSLS certification, in AVT, next year. AVT is teaching language through listening from the point of identification and using the best hearing devices possible - whether it be hearing aids or cochlear implants. This allows the child to learn to listen without lipreading and using the hearing they have to speak and learn. The children are usually at par with hearing children, but the time they enter school. Ongoing, practice is still required as we are constantly learning and new strategies need to be taught as they mature and the learning become more difficult. I have also been an Itinerant Resource Teacher, where I provided suggestions and programs to other teachers around our school board to help work with a specific child. Usually, it involved behaviour and many children with Autism. I am entering my 17th year of teaching. I have taught in the classroom from grades 6-10. I have been a Teacher of the Deaf for 8 years and at the Board level for the same amount of time. I
My teaching style is very hands on and multi-disciplinary. I make sure that I am teaching to the strategy that best works for the child. Since most of the work I currently do is one-on-one, I am able to really focus in on the specific needs of the child. I teach in both English and French. I am also fluent in ASL.
I have contributed to Warren Estabrook's final book - Auditory-Verbal Therapy For Young Children with Hearing Loss and Their Families, and the Practitioners Who Guide Them. It will be available in Hardcover – May 30 2016 by Warren Estabrooks (Author), Karen MacIver-Lux (Author), Ellen A. Rhoades (Author)
