I am a school counselor in a rural, high poverty Appalachian district. Folks in Appalachia have been innovating to make things work for hundreds of years so when canned school counseling lessons didn't work for our demographics, I embraced the Appalachian tradition of innovation to make my own.
Need a cheap school counseling curriculum? Don't want to spend $100 on props and lessons? Believe in the healing powers of fun and whimsy? I'm your woman! Multimodal, differentiated applications of existential counseling, REBT, and brief solution focused counseling, with a focus on Bandura's concept of self-efficacy. Every lesson posted is geared specifically for rural, at-risk Appalachian youth, though the universality of being rural, impoverished, or at-risk, lend these lessons well to comparable populations. No technology required for any lessons. No props that cost more than $5 required, and all props can be handmade. And while the cover page of lessons are fun colors, the lessons themselves can be printed on a standard black and white printer. No color ink required. What is required? Your expertise in counseling and a commitment to bringing your own sunshine!
