TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Supporting writers has become my second career. I loved my gigs as a weekly freelance newspaper columnist and technical writer, but now? I walked into my dream job seven years ago - I am mentoring college writing tutors, empowering student writers, and coaching support staff.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Teachers frequently hear students moan, "I can't write!" I have proven if a student can talk, he or she can write. A strong essay starts with a fascinating and focused question. Likewise, I believe students will lift their own writing standards when coached to inquire creatively and systematically. Grammar should be woven into the teaching threads, not isolated into worksheets or drills.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

When a student returns, exulting over their improved grades because of my support, I get to honor THEM by saying, "That came from YOUR words and YOUR hard work!"

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

For my second career, I earned my Master Tutor Certification from College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), an international college-level tutor training program.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I owe so much of my writing and tutoring growth to the amazing Nellie Edge (find her on TpT). She presents writing-to-read seminars to kindergarten teachers; I support pre-college and college students. Wow - the writing needs are so similar! Kids and adults all thrive in an empowering and stimulating environment. I hope to post ideas and exercises with regularity.
