A graduate of Clarion University, I have my degrees in both special education and regular education. I was hired as a long term substitute in the Pittsburgh area, where I taught 6th and 7th grade ELA. In 2006, I began working as a full time special education teacher, working with 4th grade SLD and SED students. I also worked 1:1 with students who were severely below grade level by 3 years. Through my own developed program, these students made well over a year's progress within a year. After two very rewarding years as a special education teacher, I was moved into regular education. I have had experience as a 1st grade and 3rd grade teacher, but have found my true passion is with 2nd grade. I have been with 2nd grade for five years, and hope to retire there someday! I hold the 2nd grade math and science Curriculum Support position for my district. I spent the past year developing and writing the 1st grade and 2nd grade math curriculum for our district. In addition, I am my building's technology support person, I help run Girl Power, and I coach a hip hop dance team. In my spare time (wait, do any of us teachers have that?), I'm an avid reader, I love traveling, working out, counting down the days to Christmas, and spending time with my puppies, Ralphie and LuLu.
At the age of 23, I was diagnosed with ADD. Suddenly, I understood why learning had not always come easily to me, regardless of being a gifted student. My ADD is a gift because it helps me to have a better understanding of today's students. If I'm bored, they're most definitely bored, so I strive to make each lesson fun, engaging and hands on.
