Students learn about the properties of water by testing various objects to determine whether they will sink or float. This lesson includes -Standards -Step-by-step instructions (introduction, modeling, application) -Pre-created activity sheet (formative assessment) -Differentiation: alternative activity (formative assessment ) for English Language Learners (ELL), students with I.E.P.s, etc.

Will it Float or Sink? An Experiment (Editable!)

This science experiment is an easy activity for students to practice the scientific skills of predicting and classifying while learning about buoyancy. Students will make predictions, learn new vocabulary, and classify objects based on whether they float or sink. I've left the objects blank so that you can use anything that you have on hand. At the end of the activity students predict whether a peeled or unpeeled orange will float or sink. I hope your students enjoy practicing the skills needed

Surface Tension with Adhesion and Cohesion

Cohesion (attraction force) between like molecules creates Surface Tension which allows some objects to rest on the surface of a liquid rather than floating. Adhesion is the attraction between unlike particles and explains many henomena like blood flow and tree water transport.p71pgs/16 made in class videos

Density experiment simplified for the earlier grades. It's simple but reviews the scientific process and basic concepts of density and buoyancy. It can be an enriching/follow-up experiment after sink and float and matter unit. Materials are easy to find and posters help with the presentation. I used it for my son's at home experiment that he needed to present in school. Posters were used as note cards.

Dancing Raisins Science Experiment

This is a worksheet that goes along with our Dancing Raisins science experiment (discrepant event). Made for a 1st grade ESOL group, but could be used with any young elementary class. Here's the experiment: "To do this experiment, you need ginger ale (or another clear-ish soda), raisins, and a tall clear container. Pour the ginger ale into the container and ask the kids for their hypothesis. Do they think the raisins will sink or float? When you drop the raisins in, they will sink at first
