Many of us are using the NWEA MAPS assessment to monitor our students' progress in both reading and math. This is a worksheet that I created that enables students to take ownership over their MAPS scores, and encourage them to make growth. Using this worksheet, students set goals for themselves to achieve throughout the year in both reading and math. Additionally, students can monitor their growth throughout the year to see if they have achieved their goal.

Participation Challenge

I use this in my 7th grade ELA class to challenge students to participate. This encourages them to be repsectful to other students talking, raising their hands and not shouting out the answers, and to particpate more in the classroom. When they do the following, they will earn a sticker. At the end of the week, if they have all 5 stickers they will choose from the prize box.

Teaching middle school is certainly challenging. It's difficult to motivate those students that just aren't motivated by their own grades. Our school year is divided into six 6 weeks periods. At the end of those periods, I hold a classroom raffle to raffle off bags of chips, candy, Free HW Passes and Drop the Lowest Daily Grade passes. The kids turn them in to me whenever they need a free pass. I issue my students "raffle tickets" throughout the 6 weeks when they turn in HW on time, get an A

This walks students through what the operations do in math, not using code words. My students use this when solving word problems. We go through this as we introduce the operations in word problems. We fill out an anchor chart and we spend a lot of time discussing what the operations mean. I have a blank copy for the students and have included a copy filled out for you to adjust as needed. I put the blank copy in students journal and as we fill out the anchor chart, they fill out each opera

This is an excel spreadsheet that helps you track your students' progress on the first grade common core math standards. In the white sections of each grid you can type in a number 1-5. Each number has a color code. I am using 5 as complete mastery and 1 as no mastery. On assessment type, I might type in scores rather than T for test if I want the score recorded here. If you want the 1-5 scale changed to a percentage or something, I'll be glad to do it, but it might take some time--it just depen

This was created to keep middle schoolers engaged while going over the "boring" policies and procedures. It has a positive focus and uses the CHAMPS (conversation level, help, assignment, movement, participation level, success) as a guideline for classroom expectations. It also features "Danger Dollars" as a positive reinforcement. The theme is danger, as we know, middle schoolers love risk and danger. Risk in danger, though, serve as descriptors for the challenges they will face over the course

This math assessment record for fourth grade is what I keep as essentially a student gradebook. I am a "techie" person but I have found nothing better over the years to both keep track of my students and to use to talk with them on the fly about their goals and scores. I print one out for each student at the beginning of the year and write scores in with pencil as we go through the year. At the end of the year, I make a copy for students to take home as a more meaningful record of their progress
