This file contains the notes I took at the NCTM Conference in Chicago. I attended a presentation on Subtraction by Frances Stern. She taught various ways to subtract with regrouping. My most favorite to use in class is the number line and France's way on pages 6-7. The France way is what I refer to in my class as "Give, Give It Back"...It's SO MUCH EASIER TO TEACH AND UNDERSTAND than the Traditional U.S. way. I don't know where this has been all my life. Letter to Parents for Multiplication Facts Fluency

Fractional Number Lines - Fractions, Mixed Numbers & Decimals - Level 4 - FREE
Number lines - one step in difficulty from Level 3.
Number lines begin at whole numbers - not zero. Hence, the student can find improper fractions at any point by using a whole number location on the number line - and the student is off to the races.
If students are only given discrete mixed numbers, proper fractions, improper fractions and decimals, then they 'float' in isolation. These number lines connect the elements in an application setting.

How a Teacher Can Use ItTeachers can leverage this handout as a dynamic utility rather than a static answers key: Symmetry and the Commutative Property: Teachers can use the gray diagonal axis to visually prove that changing the order of factors does not change the product (4 x 3=12). By having students locate a cell on one side of the diagonal line (like 4 x 3=12) and find its reflected counterpart on the opposite side (3 x 4=12), students physically perceive how the matrix mirrors itself.

Bears in the Cave - Student Tracking Form - Numbers 1-20
I keep this at my guided reading table. Whenever we play "Bears in the Cave" I just do a quick check next to the numbers the students get correct. This helps me to know where the students are, but most importantly it helps me to quickly group students for math centers. I can have my higher students (the ones in the teens-twenties) quiz each other as a center. I can pull my lowest ones and work on them one on one.
