This file contains the notes I took at the NCTM Conference in Chicago. I attended a presentation on Subtraction by Frances Stern. She taught various ways to subtract with regrouping. My most favorite to use in class is the number line and France's way on pages 6-7. The France way is what I refer to in my class as "Give, Give It Back"...It's SO MUCH EASIER TO TEACH AND UNDERSTAND than the Traditional U.S. way. I don't know where this has been all my life. Retaking tests in math is an important option. This form has made a big difference for my students because it puts the responsibility back on them to get extra help prior to the retake. I also have connected it to homework completion and reflection. Students are asked to use resources like their text, the teacher, or the internet. It can be easily modified for whatever you feel is helpful for your students.
