Polynomial Function Project - Roller Coaster

Created by
Algomath
In this project, students learn how to use polynomial function to model roller coaster rides. In this first part, they are given some polynomial functions to find the relative maximum/minimum, increasing/decreasing intervals, x- and y-intercepts, etc. They will explore the average rate of change. In the second part of the project, students are asked design their own roller coaster given some basic criteria. Students should use graphing devices/computer applications to complete this project.

Plight of the Adelie Penguins: An Exponential Decay Activity

Created by
Joseph Huston
Plight of the Adelie Penguins is an environmental/threatened species themed activity to demonstrate how algebraic exponential functions can be used to model real world situations. There has been an 85 percent decrease in the Adelie penguin population along the western Antarctic Peninsula since 1974. The population size of one such colony of Adelie Penguins is modeled by an exponential decay equation. In this activity, your students will work together to: * Use replacement values to evaluate

The Town of Gilbert, since 2002, has seen increases in revenue generated from its recycling program. With an increase in population, Gilbert has also seen an increase in the amount of recyclables collected. Furthermore, a recent newspaper article indicated that Gilbert has gone from getting $5 per ton to $42 per ton for recyclables. Recent data showing the amount of revenue generated and the amount of recyclables collected are shown in the table below. Students use the data to create mathematic

Across the United States, aging infrastructure—especially in power and communication lines—is becoming a growing challenge. Outdated poles, aging support structures, and increasing demands from smart devices and electric vehicles are placing unprecedented strain on old systems. Students today will be tomorrow’s engineers, analysts, and decision-makers—and they need relevant experiences that prepare them for those roles. Rebuilding the Grid: Using AP Precalculus to Rethink Aging Power and Communi

Make trigonometry come alive with this engaging, real-world project! In the Trigonometry Travel Project, students “travel” to three U.S. destinations of their choice and use the Law of Sines and Law of Cosines to form and solve a triangle on the map. Students calculate the distances between each location, find all missing angles and sides, and explore interesting or historical facts about the places they visit. The project wraps up with a short written summary of their findings — combining math,

Constructing and using piecewise functions is fun and engaging in this tax challenge. In this project students will learn about the basics of taxable income and deductions. Then they'll take on the role of a tax consultant to help their clients, Stan Lobs, Laura Lindy, and the Mula couple make sense of their tax forms. Each client falls into a different tax bracket and require the use of a piecewise function to determine their refund. Read W-2s, write refund checks, and learn how to interpret ta

This is an exploration of the parent functions and their transformations that can be stapled into a nice booklet. The parent functions it focuses on are: quadratics, identity, cubics, absolute value, greatest integer, reciprocals, and square roots. There is a page on each of the functions where students are guided through the graph of the original function using a table. Then students discover what happens when the equation is changed. Here are some of my other products you might be interes
