Statistics:Scatter Plots and Lines of Best Fit MYSTERY ACTIVITY

Created by
Math Byrd
In this fun activity students will solve the mystery of the stolen art by collecting data on classmate's standing long jump and height. Students will create a scatter plot and line of best fit for their data; then use their data to make predictions for the 5 suspects. Students will create a one page investigate report to discuss their procedure of investigation, their conclusion, and the strength of their conclusion by interpreting the correlation coefficient. Skills Used: Measure using Rulers

Circuit Training -- Probability Distributions and Random Variables

I wrote this set of 20 exercises to give my students more practice with the "bridge unit" (probability) between the basics of statistics and inference. A calculator is deifnitely required. Students begin in cell #1, work the problem, search for that answer and continue in this manner until the complete the circuit (get back to the beginning). This circuit is challenging! Let me know what you think! virge@virgecornelius.com

Statistics and Data Analysis: 5-number summary, box plots, and outliers

An introduction to data analysis, this 2-page handout (with answer KEY!) provides 6 datasets to analyze. Students compute the 5-number summary, make a box plot, describe the shape of a data set and relate the shape to the mean/median relationship, then finally go back through and check for outliers.

Insuring Multiple Events with Compound Probability

What do the Challenger explosion, internet redundancy, and car insurance have in common? They all hinge on calculating compound probability and distinguishing between independent and dependent events. This three-tiered application problem set can be used to differentiate or scaffold the learning. Level 1 -- Use compound interest to calculate the probability of an internet outageLevel 2 -- Compare car insurance premiums using expected valueLevel 3 -- Explore how insurance companies set their p

The main objective of Mathematics is to teach students how to think critically and analyze information to arrive at a logical solution. In the activity to follow, the student will be requested to analyze an open ended question and provide the necessary strategies to determine the correct solution to the given information. The topics of frequency, circle measure, degrees, drawing angles, and percentages are discussed. An answer guide is provided.

The partner then describes the vocabulary word and the person holding the card has to guess. For every one the student guesses correct, they earn a point, and the game continues for 1-2 minutes before they switch off. Play in teams, or teams play against other teams in this fun game to practice statistics vocabulary. This

AP Statistics - Probability True-False Sorting Activity

This is a pair or small group activity for a statistics class in which students will discuss and determine whether 12 cards give true or false statements about probability. The false cards highlight some common misconceptions about probability, such as the idea that outcomes must always be equally likely. I like to have students work in pairs sorting the cards into true and false, then letting them know that there should be six of each. We follow this up with a discussion of each card where s

They will either use a graphing calculator or given graphs and functions to explore quadratic and exponential regressions. They will make a short-term prediction about the world record in 2015. This mission is aligned with Common Core Standards: 8.SP.A.1, 8.SP.A.2, 8.SP.A.3. The fun stuff: 2323 pounds. That’s the weight of a world record for the heaviest
