Modeling the spread of ebola using calculus (original and key)
This project has 4 pages.
page 1 gives data on the cases/deaths due to ebola. Students are asked to model both and find an appropriate function. [table to graph/function]
page 2 asks students to analyze the rate of change of the cases/deaths and find an appropriate derivative function. [approximate rate of change using slope in table, make graph/function]
page 3 asks students to consider an equation for the growth and use derivative analysis (increasing/decreasing concavity extremes) to answer

This unit includes everything you need when covering the disc & shell methods and arc length and surface area in calculus class. I use an interactive whiteboard (interwrite) in conjunction with the Turning Point student clickers so the two powerpoint presentations are ready for that (they can also be used without the technology). AP Calculus Optimization Discovery Project with M&Ms!
Optimization is a tricky topic in calculus. This one-day activity allows students to discover how calculus can help them.
