Connecting the Graphs of the First and Second Derivatives

This is one of my favorite activities to get students to find patterns between the graphs of the first and second derivative in relation to the original function. It asked students to sketch them based on the given curve, then find intervals of increasing/decreasing, concavity, etc. It then asks them to constantly look at connections between the graphs. This activity consistently generates high quality discussions during and after.

Applications of Derivatives: Maximum Velocity of a Cough

This is created to be an in class assignment graded assignment, which will take approximately 25 minutes depending on the skill levels of the students. The answer key/scoring guidelines are attached at the end of the worksheet. The worksheet should be used after Increasing and Decreasing Functions and the First Derivative Test are taught.

File contains three pages: a blank unit circle quiz, a blank unit circle practice page, and a unit circle key. 2/22/2022 - fixed typo on the key 12/29/2023 - added Easel activity Please leave me a comment if you have any suggestions on how to make the Easel assignment better. I was hoping that students would be able to copy and paste the square root and pi symbols to put in the boxes, but I don't know if it actually works to do that.

Calculus Notes: Intro to the Derivative

Introduce the derivative as the LIMIT of a DIFFERENCE QUOTIENT. Students are actively involved in the Graphical, Algebraic, and Numerical analysis of the limit of "rise over run" as the "run" decreases toward zero. Students work through four graphical examples of the derivative at a point.
