Students use two rules (one on the length and one on the width) to create square units. Students use rules or another straight edge tool to create square units and determine the area. Students then show their thinking as to how they find the area: counting squares, repeated addition, or multiplication. This activity guides the learner in finding the surface area of a 3-D object (cube). TLW classifies the 3-D object by labeling its edges, faces, and vertices. Then, given dimensions and a visual representation of the net of a cube, TLW calculate the area of each face and sum the total for the cube's surface area. I use this resource as an interactive math journal activity for my alternate middle school math class, but it can be used as differentiated notes, quiz, or for reinforcement or review.
