Probability of Compound Events (Guided Notes)

Created by
Eddie McCarthy
This lesson is meant to be used as guided notes for a whole class. Students begin by learning what makes 2 events independent. After slowly working through a problem about rolling a die and choosing a card, they discover that they can multiply probabilities when working with these compound events. They then attempt problems involving picking marbles from a bag. Next, they learn about dependent events, and finally, mutually exclusive events. The last 2 pages are a copy of the key.

Analyzing Winning Olympic Speed Skating Times: Linear Regression

In this exercise, the student is asked to make a scatter plot of a set of two variable data (the winning times in the women’s long-track Olympic speed skating contests from 1960 to 2018) and draw a line of fit, by hand. Then the student is asked to find the equation of their line of fit. Next, the student is asked to use a graphing utility to repeat this exercise and compare the result to their “by-hand” attempt. This exercise provides an opportunity to develop an intuitive understanding of line

Brief Notes on Dot Plots (Line Plots) Quick Notes My notes are scaffold for student learning to slowly lose the reigns of learning into students' hands. I first teach different orientations of Dot Plots so that students know what to expect and how to describe them. For these orientations I use letter grades for the examples so that I can have students relate to what the graphs express. I then have students do both a simple dot plot and a categorized dot plot. I teach students with brief notes t

It is ironic that in this age of recession, baseball players are doing better than they ever have before. Teachers are chastised for asking for full time wages for working 10 months a year, while ballplayers play a game for 6 months a year and the average major league ballplayer is paid FIFTY TIMES (average major league salary $2 million/year … Starting teaching salary $40K) that of a beginning teacher. Since the rising salary is a fact of life, let’s figure out just how much these players con

Hypothesis Test for a Population Mean - Analogy to a Criminal Trial

Created by
Rosella's Room
This is a student workbook that can supplement lessons on hypothesis testing for a population mean. The preview gives an example of pages from the workbook. I teach the stages of hypothesis testing using analogies to a criminal trial. My students like this comparison; they are more engaged and it helps them to see the relevance of the different stages. Once students are confident with the terminology, we create our own courtroom in the classroom and role-play the stages of hypothesis testing wit

A Step-by-Step Guide to Calculating the Standard Deviation of a Data Set

This is set contains two standard deviation graphic organizers for students just introduced to the concept of standard deviations, students having trouble calculating the standard deviation of a data set, or students who require graphic organizers as a classroom accommodation. The first organizer has a given data set (10 numbers total) and students fill in the boxes as they progress through each step of finding the standard deviation. The second does not give a data set, but is set up to wor

Tiered Lesson for Statistics CCSS 7.SP.A.2 , 7.SP.B.3, 7.SP.B.4

This is a tiered lesson I did for a statistics unit. It could be used as a tiered lesson or it could be used just as 3 practice sheets. The 3 lessons are not dramatically different because I used this in an advanced class so even my lowest tier it is still somewhat advanced. Group A is the lowest tier and group C is the most advanced. This lesson includes mean, median, box plots, and MAD. I have not included an answer sheet yet but I plan to update it with one in the future.

In the new Texas TEKs, 8th grade students must be able to calculate the MAD of a small data set. This foldable note-taking guide helps students take this process one step at a time. I encourage students to reference this structured example as they work more complex problems, and analyze the MAD of multiple data sets. This foldable guide is designed to get them s
