Characteristics of Parent Functions

I looked all over for a chart that shows the characteristics of the parent functions and did not come up with anything that included everything I needed so I created this chart. It is six pages with each parent function on a separate page. The characteristics are domain, range, interval of increase, extrema, end behavior, y intercept, x intercept, rate of change, and symmetry. This was extremely helpful for my students when they were comparing the parent functions using a Venn diagram and stud

This bundle teaches factoring quadratic expressions by walking through twelve skills from multiplying monomials to factoring trinomials with and without greatest common factors. This bundle uses a box as a visual aid for multiplying polynomials and for factoring, reinforcing the inverse relationship between these operations. This is designed to teach fluency and understanding, developing skills that work for all quadratics, rather than memorizing several special cases and shortcuts for each cas

Piecewise Functions Guided Notes AND Assignment (algebra)

I wrote these guided notes for my algebra one students as an introduction to piecewise functions. They understand a function as an input / output machine and they understand the notation. They do not know about the vertical line test or formal definition yet, and they do not know the words domain and range. But, since we were finishing up compound inequalities, I thought it would be a great place and time to introduce the piecewise function. This is not a circuit! It's just a set of notes

INB NOTES - Algebra - Linear vs. Quadratic vs. Exponential

Notes for students to easily see the differences between linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. REMARKMost instructors only teach exponential functions in the form y=a(b)^x. These functions show a constant ratio between the y values. However, these notes include exponential functions in the form y=a(b)^x + h. For these functions, you should find the first differences, and then find the constant ratio between the y-values. Related activity:TASK CARD SORT ACTIVITY - Linear vs. Quadratic vs

Factoring ALL Trinomials Guided Notes

This guided notes page teaches factoring trinomials using grouping. There are a lot of different ways to factor, but I've had the most success with this method because it works in all cases. Grouping uses students' understanding of greatest common factor. This method can be used to factor trinomials, regardless of if a=1 or a is not 1, and it can be used to factor difference of squares. It takes the guess work out of "Which method do I use to factor?" and builds on conceptual understanding!
