This is a viewing activity for middle school students to complete as they watch the video titled, ' How Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloons Are Made'. If your school has a paid subscription to Scholastic Storyworks Magazines (like mine does), you can simply use your teacher account to access it. If not, Scholastic has made the video available on YouTube for free. This is the YouTube link to the video.

Float On Water E.D.P.

As students take on the role of an engineer, they must design and create something that will float on water and will be able to hold pennies. We would usually brainstorm as a class what materials are available to use and what they could potentially bring in from home. When testing, I've used blocks, pennies or weights to measure strength!

Float Your Boat Lab

This lab may be used as a discovery lab (to use before the concept is taught) or as a lab to reinforce teaching. Either way... the kids love this lab and will want to do it over and over in attempts to create the ‘perfect’ boat. The lab and the science is so basic to understanding buoyancy and floating/ sinking that it becomes a reference point for future lessons.

In this lesson, students will be introduced to the parts of a ship and their correct names. Students will begin to understand the scientific principle of buoyancy and how the different parts of the ship are necessary to make the ship float. In the end, students will use the information obtained to create a ship out of aluminum foil that is capable of floating and carrying a “cargo.”

Cardboard Boat Project

Will you sink or float? This STEM cardboard boat project is intended for schools with access to a pool or lake. In the project students learn about buoyancy and apply the principles to develop a cardboard boat capable of carrying 2 people. The students work through the design cycle as they build prototypes, do research, and modify their boats. The project lasts around 7 class periods, culminating in a competition on the last day. Files include PowerPoints and handouts. The project was designed f

Title: Engineering Challenge — Aluminum Foil Boat Design Summary: In this hands-on engineering lab, students design and test aluminum foil boats to explore how density, buoyancy, and displacement determine whether objects float or sink. Each team builds two boat designs, predicts how many pennies each will hold, tests their designs, and records results. Students analyze how shape changes affect water displacement and buoyant force, then improve their second design based on observations. The lab
