Rube Goldberg

Created by
Camille Ussery
This is a project outline/presentation to guide the students on following the engineering process to build a Rube Goldberg machine. Each day I assigned certain steps and gave the students time to spend on each step. We shared the research with the groups. Before students moved on they had to show me their design prototype to make sure they had at least 3 simple machines. You can increase the amount of simple machines or say at least 5 simple machines and some can be repeated.

Parents loved this product as well as students. It stayed with them both at home and in class folders as a reference. We used it for daily homework and quick quizzes as Amplify at this time does not have any additional practice with the content words. Special Ed. friendly as well as for the students who finish work quickly and have "nothing to do." With this there is always definitions and vocabulary to be used and an automatic weekly homework with NO PREP unless you want to add other assig

STEM CHALLENGE: Newspaper Table I don't know about you by my students LOVE STEM challenges! They all enjoy the hands on building component, show really valuable mathematic, science and design learning and my favorite thing, have showed great improvement in teamwork skills! This challenge focus on students working in small teams to plan and build a structure from newspaper and masking tape, that can hold an increasing weight (stacked books!). To add to the fun, this challenge can be run as a posi

Simple Machines Rube Goldberg Challenge

One of my personal favorite activities to get students involved in simple machines! Teams of students, which can range from 2 to 4, get a box of everyday items and are required to complete mini-Rube Goldbergs using these materials. Increasing in difficulty as the levels progress, students must work together to apply these simple machines to accomplish each task. For example, the last challenge requires students to turn the page of a book. Simple, right? Until you can only use a spoon, string a

I don't know about you, but each year, I find myself scrambling to find problems such as these to teach or review science lab tools. It could be a formative assessment that would be great at the beginning of the school year. It could be

Everything beneath the layers of the ocean is under a great deal of pressure (the amount of force per unit area). Water, like all things on Earth, is continually pulled downward by the force of gravity. As you go deeper into the ocean there is more water above you and therefore a greater weight pushing down on you. This is the reason water pressure increases with depth. In fact, for every 10 meters traveled deeper into the ocean, there is an additional 6.47kg (14.27lbs) of pressure on each squar
