Finger Checks / Montrez-moi les mains
This is a super flexible and quick strategy for using as a quick formative assessment. I use it in foreign language classes, but it has countless applications. Students hold up fingers representing how much they understand, and teacher checks in briefly with each of them to see how the comprehension level is. Takes about 90 seconds to go around a class of 25 students and gives sort of a "barometer" of who is getting how much.

Editable Warm Up Sheet
Start the class in an organized way with a warm-up question. Each day students walk in, take out their warm-up sheet and begin working. This step in the beginning of my class has transformed students' focus throughout the lesson. I copy the warm-up sheet double sided so that, students have one warm-up sheet for two weeks. I used to print these on cardstock, but now I send to VISTAPRINT and get 500 of them for $10 and it lasts me a while! If color printing is an issue, you can also purchase colored card stock and print black & white on the colored paper.

I wanted to find an easy, intuitive way for students to track their own progress in several different aspects of their learning in my French classroom. This chart gives them the chance to break down each test or quiz they take into several categories (listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar) and track their progress in each category as well as overall. This gives students a chance to assess their own areas of strength and weakness and begin to develop a plan for growth.
