This worksheet was created to help first graders understand the concept of addition and subtraction with manipulatives. It's harder than it looks! It's a great cooperative activity and can be used as a formative assessment. Model it first, do it as a class, send them off to try it and see what happens! Unifix Cubes work great. You can also edit them to match your curriculum or essential outcomes!

This lesson also involves students going over basic mathematics skills such as adding, multiplication, and division. They will also practice simplifying fractions, converting fractions to decimals, and converting decimals into percents. Great activity that students can complete independently, with a partner, or in groups.

Addition Fact Power Quiz (Sums through 10)

I use this timed quiz with my first grade students every Friday when we begin studying addition facts in the Everyday Math curriculum. Every week, students who score a certain number correct get their names added to the "I have Fact Power!" poster and are exempt from the following weeks' quizzes (many opt to take them anyway!) I find it really motivates my students to memorize and have quick recall of those pesky basic addition facts that are the foundation of so many higher-level math skills. T
