About the store
I have been teaching for 18 years in Georgia. I have taught elementary regular education for most of my career, but I did teach a middle school self-contained special education class for three years and I loved it! I'm back in elementary school now working with students in 1st and 2nd grade who have Autism or other developmental delays.

Functional Sight Words - Level 1 - Words 1 to 50

This is a set of worksheets from my special education classroom that uses a functional curriculum to teach academics and life skills. Sometimes, the programs we are given are very simple or they've been in place so long that pieces are missing. I came up with these worksheets to help my students have more practice with their words than just what the reading program was giving them. This comes from a functional reading program (that I won't name). This set contains the first 50 words of Level 1 o

Georgia Rivers Adapted for SWD

My middle school students have mild to moderate intellectual disabilities and are being taught using a functional curriculum. We wanted to learn about Georgia since that is an 8th grade standard. However, the materials I could find were over our ability levels. I created an adapted cut and paste activity to help my students learn three of the major rivers in Georgia. One is a simple cut and paste and the other is the same sheet with color coded visual prompting.

Adapted Author's Purpose Cut and Paste

This activity was created to teach a Functional Curriculum class about the idea of Author's Purpose. We only focused on Entertain and Inform for this activity. The students look at the picture of a text or type of book and then cut and paste it under the appropriate purpose. Picture prompts were provided to help the students know what the purpose meant.

I made this for my K-2 MOID class after we learned about light and sound. As always lots of picture clues and my students either point to the answer or circle the answer.

This is a goal tracker that I use in the classroom but I have modified for digital/distance learning to help us keep up with not only a student's IEP goals but with their participation in distance learning.

Thanksgiving Plate Writing Activity

I created this activity for my Special Education classroom when my students wanted to tell me all about EVERYTHING they ate for Thanksgiving! With this activity they can cut out the pictures of what they ate to glue onto their plate. Then they can use the sentence frames to write about it. I often glue both pieces to a piece of construction paper and make a bulletin board out of it.

This version is editable. I usually type the students' IEP goals into the boxes instead of handwriting them.

This is a way to teach my functional curriculum students about word connotations. They have to cut out the word/picture and decide if it's something that makes them feel good or not good.

Mathematics Skills Tracker

I use this skill tracker to keep track of where my students are for telling time, counting money, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. I simply write their name in pencil and as they move along I move their name. When I'm planning lessons it's a great tool to know where everyone is at as well as being very helpful when it comes to progress reports and IEP meetings.

About the store

Experience

I have been teaching for 18 years in Georgia. I have taught elementary regular education for most of my career, but I did teach a middle school self-contained special education class for three years and I loved it! I'm back in elementary school now working with students in 1st and 2nd grade who have Autism or other developmental delays.

Teaching style

As a special education teacher I am used to differentiating my lessons all the time! I love to give students hands on, meaningful activities rather than busy work.

My own education history

I have a Bachelor's and Master's Degree. I am currently thinking about going back for my Specialist or Doctorate in Special Education.

Additional biographical information

Aside from being a teacher, I have two children (both of whom have Autism), two cats, and one dog we rescued from a shelter (Best decision ever, Adopt...Don't Shop!)! I also have Aspergers Syndrome and Anxiety. I find it's actually helpful in getting to know my students and helping them find ways to make education work for them.
