About the store
I jumped around for awhile before deciding that art was where I wanted to stay. I have been a teacher's aide, long-term substitute, classroom teacher, tutor, and summer camp teacher for grades K-12. I have taught art, computer, foods and nutrition, Bible, and after-school science. My store name -- Amalgamate -- came about because I like to mix and unite my favorite things instead of sticking to one area.

About the store

Experience

I jumped around for awhile before deciding that art was where I wanted to stay. I have been a teacher's aide, long-term substitute, classroom teacher, tutor, and summer camp teacher for grades K-12. I have taught art, computer, foods and nutrition, Bible, and after-school science. My store name -- Amalgamate -- came about because I like to mix and unite my favorite things instead of sticking to one area.

Teaching style

There are 4 core things that I want students to receive in art class: an appreciation for art, knowledge of the basic fundamentals of design, development of skills, and the confidence to be creative. Art is one subject where it is okay to make mistakes, and I allow students to try techniques and ideas for themselves rather than show them how a project should look. Otherwise, they will simply copy me rather than learn for themselves. I believe encouraging creativity builds on students’ problem-solving skills that will carry over to other areas.

Awards & shining teacher moments

A principal gave me the "Lifesaver Award" for coming in at the middle of the school year to teach Computer Skills when they had no one.

My own education history

BFA in Visual Art, concentration in painting and drawing
