This is my seventh year of teaching--and I love it! Yes, everyday is a challenge, but I face that challenge head-on. I work with a difficult group of children, coming from homes where survival is far more important that completing their homework. I am determined to do well and continue with this passion for as long as I am able to do so!
This classroom tested lesson is a fun way to apply ratios and proportions to the real world. Included is a warm-up reviewing fraction operations, a worksheet all about planning a trip to the beach (called Beach Time Ratios and Proportions), a memory game that requires students to evaluate a proportion and find its matching answer card, and a one-question exit ticket to give you the opportunity to quickly evaluate how your students have done with understanding the concepts within this lesson. This quiz is a classroom-tested creation. This was made to test students' abilities with recognizing the order of rational numbers, but especially negative numbers. Students often label, for example, -2 ½ incorrectly to the right of the -2 because on the positive side of the number line, 2 ½ goes to the right of 2. After instructing how to correctly place integers on a number line, then students should be able to complete this quiz with an acceptable grade. Enjoy!
Do you need something quick and easy for emergency sub plans? Are you at the end of the year and at your wit's end trying to find something that will keep your students engaged? Then look no further! Here we have a math worksheet that has been created to be completed while viewing the completely child-appropriate Finding Nemo. Experience
This is my seventh year of teaching--and I love it! Yes, everyday is a challenge, but I face that challenge head-on. I work with a difficult group of children, coming from homes where survival is far more important that completing their homework. I am determined to do well and continue with this passion for as long as I am able to do so!
Teaching style
I am a very hands-on teacher. Even though sometimes worksheets and repetitive practice are necessary, I enjoy making learning math a fun experience. I try to do this through games and challenges where I force students to think and persevere to get to their answer.
Awards & shining teacher moments
Even though I have yet to be publically recognized by an offical for the work I have done, I am awarded everyday by students who say, "I love your class, Mrs. Smith." If it weren't for these moments, I wouldn't love my job as much as I do :)
My own education history
I grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I was always a very studious person, earning nothing below a B for my entire educational life (K through college senior).I love learning--it is my passion. My goal is to pass that passion on to my students, hopefully producing a new, excited generation of educators.
